The tractor goes into gear with the gear shift. The clutch has compression. I hear a grinding noise coming from under my feet. Like Roy said check the knob first, but by now the tractor should have atleast had a hydraulic filter change. If I remember right judging from the numbering system change, a 990 is at least a couple years old and probably should have had it changed regardless of the hours. Just my 2 cents.
